How it works
The Paint Quantity and Wall Coverage Calculator provides precise estimates of architectural coatings required for room walls and ceilings. By deducting standard door and window openings and applying certified spreading rates per liter, this tool eliminates paint shortages and prevents over-purchasing costly excess paint.
Formula for Net Paintable Wall Area
Calculating paint volume follows standard architectural estimating procedures:
- Perimeter: Calculate the room perimeter:
Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width). - Gross Wall Area:
Gross Area = Perimeter × Ceiling Height. - Opening Deductions: Standard deductions subtract 2.0 m² (21.5 sq ft) for each interior door, and 1.5 m² (16.1 sq ft) for each standard window.
- Ceiling Area (Optional): If painting the ceiling in the same coating, add:
Ceiling Area = Length × Width(see square footage calculator).
Worked Residential Example: A master bedroom measuring 4 meters by 4 meters with a standard 2.8-meter ceiling height, 1 standard entry door, and 1 standard window, receiving 2 coats of premium acrylic emulsion with a coverage rate of 10 m²/L, packaged in 18-liter buckets:
- Room Perimeter = 2 × (4 + 4) = 16.0 linear meters.
- Gross Wall Surface Area = 16.0 × 2.8 = 44.80 m².
- Openings Deduction = (1 door × 2.0 m²) + (1 window × 1.5 m²) = 3.50 m².
- Net Paintable Surface Area = 44.80 - 3.50 = 41.30 m².
- Total Area to Coat (2 coats) = 41.30 × 2 = 82.60 m².
- Total Paint Volume Required = 82.60 ÷ 10 = 8.26 Liters.
- Containers to Purchase = 1 large bucket (18 Liters), leaving 9.74 Liters of leftover paint for touch-ups or ceiling coating.
- Sealer / Primer Required (1 coat at 12 m²/L) = 41.30 ÷ 12 = 3.44 Liters.
- Wall Putty / Skim Coat Required (2 passes) = 41.30 × 1.2 = 49.56 kg of putty.
Paint Coverage Rates by Coating Type and Surface Condition
Representative spreading rates for common architectural paint categories are summarized below:
| Coating Type & Base | Spreading Rate per Coat (m²/L) | Recommended Coats | Primary Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penetrating Water-based Primer | 11 – 13 m²/L | 1 coat | Fresh plaster, drywall, masonry alkali seal |
| Ready-mix Wall Putty / Joint Compound | 0.8 – 1.2 kg/m² | 2 skim passes | Surface leveling, filling pinholes & texture |
| Interior Acrylic Matt / Flat Emulsion | 10 – 12 m²/L | 2 coats | Ceilings, bedrooms, living spaces |
| Interior Semi-Gloss / Satin Emulsion | 9 – 11 m²/L | 2 coats | Bathrooms, kitchens, high-traffic corridors |
| Oil-based Alkyd Enamel | 12 – 14 m²/L | 2 coats | Wood doors, window frames, steel railings |
| Exterior Textured Masonry Paint | 2 – 4 m²/L | 1 to 2 coats | Exterior building facades, weatherproofing |
Standard Commercial Paint Can Sizes
- Large Commercial Bucket (Drum): Contains 18 Liters (or 14–15L depending on brand). Most cost-effective packaging for multi-room projects.
- Medium Bucket: Contains 9 Liters (approx 2.4 gallons). Ideal for single room renovations.
- Standard US / Imperial Gallon: Contains 3.75 Liters (or 3.6L). Popular for accent walls and trim.
- Small Quart / Liter Can: Contains 1.0 Liter. Used for test swatches, minor touch-ups, and decorative trim.
Step-by-Step Wall Preparation for Professional Finish
- Clean and Sand: Remove loose mortar particles, dust, and grease with fine sandpaper.
- Apply Primer / Sealer: Unsealed drywall and plaster absorb liquid paint unevenly, causing flashing and premature peeling. A dedicated primer seals surface porosity.
- Two Skim Coats of Putty: Apply two thin coats of joint compound or putty, sanding smooth with 220-grit sandpaper between coats.
- Coordinate Other Interior Trades: After painting, estimate floor tiling with the tile calculator or structural work with the concrete calculator.
