How it works

The Rebar Weight and Steel Quantity Calculator is an essential structural engineering tool for civil engineers, quantity surveyors, reinforcing steel detailers, and site supervisors. It calculates nominal unit weights, total tonnage, and bar bundle counts in accordance with ASTM A615, BS 4449, and ISO 6935 standards.

The Engineering Formula for Rebar Unit Weight (kg/m)

The nominal weight per linear meter of standard deformed carbon steel reinforcement derives from the cross-sectional area of a solid cylinder and the density of structural carbon steel (benchmark value of 7,850 kg/m³):

Weight per Linear Meter (kg/m) = D² ÷ 162.2 Exact Nominal Weight = D² ÷ 162.198 (where D is bar diameter in millimeters) Single Bar Weight (kg for 12m bar) = Unit Weight (kg/m) × Bar Length (m) Bars per Metric Ton (1,000 kg) = 1,000 ÷ Single Bar Weight

Worked Civil Engineering Example: A reinforced concrete slab specification requires Ø12 mm rebar (No. 4 metric) in standard 12-meter mill lengths. The order bill of quantities lists 50 pieces:

  • Weight per Linear Meter = 12² ÷ 162.198 = 0.888 kg/m.
  • Single 12-Meter Bar Weight = 0.888 × 12 = 10.65 kg.
  • Total Linear Footage / Meters = 50 bars × 12 m = 600 linear meters.
  • Total Batch Weight = 600 m × 0.888 kg/m = 532.7 kg.
  • Total Quantity in Metric Tons = 532.7 ÷ 1,000 = 0.533 Metric Tons.
  • Number of 12 mm Bars in 1 Full Ton = 1,000 ÷ 10.65 = 93.9 bars (approx 94 pieces).

Verifying Rebar Quality and Mill Certifications on Site

  1. Weighing a 1-Meter Test Specimen: Cut exactly 1,000 mm of rebar on site and weigh it on a calibrated digital scale. ASTM and Eurocode allow a mass tolerance of ±4% to ±6%. If the unit weight falls below this threshold, the batch has been under-rolled and must be rejected.
  2. Review Mill Test Certificates (MTC): Every steel delivery must be accompanied by an MTC confirming yield strength (Grade 60 / B500B / 420–500 MPa), chemical composition (carbon equivalent CEV ≤ 0.50% for weldability), and Heat Lot Number.
  3. Inspect Surface Rib Markings: High-yield deformed rebar features embossed manufacturer marks, mill identification, bar size, and steel grade stamped directly along the longitudinal ribs.
  4. Coordination with Ready-Mix Concrete: Rebar estimation works hand-in-hand with concrete pours. Standard reinforced elements consume 80 to 120 kg of steel per cubic meter of concrete; calculate pour volume with the concrete calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate rebar weight per meter?

Square the diameter in millimeters and divide by 162.2 (or 162.198). For example, for a 12mm bar: 12 × 12 ÷ 162.198 = 0.888 kg per linear meter.

How many pieces of rebar are in one metric ton for 10mm, 12mm, and 16mm?

For standard 12-meter bars: 10mm rebar contains 135 pieces per ton; 12mm rebar contains 94 pieces per ton; and 16mm rebar contains 53 pieces per ton.

Where does the 162.2 constant come from in the rebar formula?

The formula derives from the cylinder volume formula multiplied by steel density (7,850 kg/m³). Converting millimeters to meters and factoring out constants yields [4 × 1,000,000 ÷ (π × 7,850)] = 162.198.

What is the difference between Grade 40 and Grade 60 rebar?

Grade 60 rebar has a minimum yield strength of 60,000 psi (420 MPa), whereas Grade 40 has a yield strength of 40,000 psi (280 MPa). Grade 60 is standard in modern seismic structural codes because it allows for reduced steel weight and higher load capacity.

How much steel reinforcement is required per cubic meter of concrete?

Normal residential slabs require 70 to 90 kg/m³; heavy beam and flat-slab systems require 90 to 120 kg/m³; and heavily loaded columns consume 130 to 180 kg/m³ of concrete.

What is the acceptable rebar fabrication scrap waste on construction sites?

With an optimized Bar Bending Schedule (BBS), cutting waste should remain between 3% and 5%. Without optimization, manual site fabrication can experience scrap losses exceeding 8%.
